Candice Mensah

Candice Mensah, a native Washingtonian, was raised in Northern Virginia by her Ghanaian parents. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for her Ghanaian heritage, particularly through the art of cooking.

Growing up, Candice learned traditional Ghanaian recipes and dishes inspired by her heritage alongside her mother. This culinary education ignited a passion that would eventually lead her to pursue her dream of owning a restaurant rooted in her Ghanaian-American identity. In 2019, Candice realized her vision by launching Hedzole. Her goal was to share her unique culinary perspective as a Ghanaian-American, creating a welcoming space for both those familiar with West African cuisine and newcomers alike. She wanted to make the food accessible to everyone and share her passion for the food and the culture. The name "Hedzole" holds special significance, derived from the Gā people of Accra, Ghana, Candice's ethnic heritage. It translates to freedom and comfort, reflecting the restaurant's mission to provide a liberating and comforting dining experience.

In summary, Candice Mensah's Hedzole represents a fusion of culinary passion, cultural heritage, and a desire to share the rich flavors of Ghana with a wider audience. It is more than just a restaurant; it is a culinary journey that celebrates freedom, comfort, and the vibrant spirit of Ghanaian-American culture.
